Our everyday crossings in the public space contribute to an impulse, almost incomprehensible, game. As we step on the paving stones of a pavement or of a square within the urban landscape, we avoid stepping on their separating lines without trying to rationalize it at that very moment. Driven by an internal need, that can even reach the point of compulsiveness, we invent an action, a game that we win only if we avoid the lines.
The project Try not to step the line is about an ephemeral installation on paving stones in the public space. A series of neon light tubes is installed right on their joints, aiming in this way to underline, highlight, magnify these small and lonely moments of walking, trying to change the way we perceive our time and space within the public landscape. It is an ephemeral memorial to the “least architecture” of the public space, of the joint that connects the slabs that we step on to find ourselves somewhere else.
A few seconds, a few minutes, some steps of qualitative loneliness outside the usual and strictly predefined space-time. The project tries to attribute the dimensions of vital expression and important procedure to an ostensibly small and minor action.
